The Prospect was first launched
at in September 1995 and released their first issue in October 1995. David
Goodhart said during this time they “more liberal than conservative in
political outlook but stood for nothing much more than good writing (especially
essays and long form writing), independence of mind and an optimistic realism
about human affairs.”
The Prospects first issue mainly
focused on political freedom and growth within the economy, but as the years go
on, the magazine added new sections and features to appeal to a wider audience
and move with societies growth. In 2001, Alexander Linklater started to
introduce different essays and articles on culture and arts. They also began
publishing short stories and very distinct choices of cartoons. This began to
attract a lot of attention. After the 9/11 attack the magazine had a change and
focused mainly on foreign policy such as Islam and democracy and the tensions beginning
to emerge between the US and Europe. Into the 2000s the Prospect decided that
in a policy sense they were going to try to be less political. David Goodhart
has also stated that in recent years they “continue to diversify away from
politics and current affairs”.
